Although it’s often portrayed as a payment technology, it’s more appropriate to think of it as a “touch to act” technology that will enable applications such as smart posters, discount tokens, mobile tickets, authentication and check-in to location-based
services. Some smartphones incorporating NFC are already available, but we expect that by 2015 over 30 percent of all handsets shipped globally will include NFC. The proportion will be higher in mature markets. Payment and perhaps other NFC applications are likely to become a battleground among banks, network operators and megavendors such as Google, which may slow adoption.
